I live in SC and have been trying to get a job in LE for close to a year now. I have applied at a number of agencies around the state and seem to be getting beaten out by people with military experience even with probably haigher test scores than them. I attended college for almost 4 years and have 93 credit hours but i ran out of money and have too many loans to continue at this point. Is there anything that can help me look better the the hiring agencies. I understand the military thing but they seem to think that it you are so much better if you have this experience. i am not putting that down, i just dont understand. Also I have some question on physical fitness tests, how long are the runs (how quickly must you do it), alos what number o fpushups and situps are required. I cannot seem to find any info on the pushups or situps anywhere. any help from everyone would be greatly appreciated.

different departments most likely have different standards. The standards to be hired are most likely to be lower than standards to be certified as a police officer. Hint - if agencies are only hiring ex-military, you might want to consider doing a few years in the military - especially the military police field, regardless of military branch that you prefer. Think about it, if you are a police department with one open position, and you have one applicant that has 4 years experience as an MP -vs- the next applicant that has nothing, which would you choose? -Greg

well Greg.......you are correct.....one would hire the the one with a bit of expierence......but, do all services like you to"FORGET WHAT YOU'VE LEARNED WE WILL TRAIN YOU OUR WAY" therefore, that theory goes out the window. Personally I see community service, volunteer work within the community and.....volunteer work within a police service shows you are dedicated to your community.....a far better asset...just because you were in the military....doesn't neccesarily make you a better applicant for a position as a police officer......it just shows the service that you can be trained. Its like taking an applicant that has a masters and just graduated......and another applicant that has been in the work field for the same years and has dedicated some time to community service IE....volunteer work.....who do you think has developed ppl skills?????.....personally....I'd take the ppl skills over the education....but each service has its own mandate.Vin

I am in agreement with both of you guys --- to a degree at least, but, FROM MY VIEWPOINT, even though the guy from the military may WELL know Military Police Procedures does not mean that he knows beans about Community Police Procedures, and, it is the community involved here; therefore, WHETHER OR NOT there is some ex-G.I. competing for a position with a regular civilian, who has little or no experience, but has a certain amount of education towards say a Criminal Justice degree --- I would forget about that ex-G.I. and choose the other. The EX-GI may know ALL ABOUT what to do with some guy in an off-limits area, but, when he is a civilian again, he may not know the FIRST thing to do in regards to incidences of like nature at all.
