My new husband is a peace officer. I am hoping that those with experience can offer some advice as to how to cope with worrying about him being out on the street.

Being a close friend or espoused to anyone involved in Law Enforcement --- no matter what their duties involve, but, ESPEICALLY if their duties are things like Street Patrol and such --- is one of the most difficult things people face, especially newly married/formed-friendships. The concern, worry, thinking, and so on keep on going no matter if you can somehow adjust to the situation.

A major thing for spouses is though that most departments have an Auxillary to which spouses can belong and via which they are able to confide in others of the group as to their own feelings, anxieties and such. If your department does NOT have such a group, maybe you could get together with some of the other wives and form your own group.

Some of the ways I "cover" my thoughts include such things as baking and doing things during which my mind HAS to concentrate on what I am doing. Additionally, the department my Best Friend is an officer in, knows of my concerns and knows that if anything happens to him, they are to inform me as soon as possible. But, it still does not make me totally forget that something could happen to him while he is on duty.

I hope some of the more experienced wives/husbands (for, there are husbands of lady-officers, too) will step forward and offer their advice.

I have done a Copy and Paste of Vinman's response to this question --- his response is the ENTIRE thing in the proverbial "nutshell" -----

That covers it completely. I am a guy, and, when I meet a cop, he gets a hug from me, and, you will not know of the reactions I get from doing that at all. Most of them laugh because a guy is hugging them, but occassionally, some get tears within their eyes and don't say a word.
