How many officers/deputies actually carry a weapon off duty? How about a back-up while on duty? What type of handgun is the best for off-duty or for a back-up? I'm curious to see the response of Leo's that actually carry off duty and what type of firearm is being carried the most?

I carried a gun on duty and off duty for 30 years, and still do since I retired. When I did carry a backup, it was uaally a small j-frame S&W. Now, most days I carry a .45 1911.

Sarge, thanx for the reply,I always carry a gun off duty, I also carry a backup (our agency permits it). I carry a Kahr P40 (.40 cal.) It is small enough to conceal anywhere, and hides nicely on a vest holster or an ankle holster. Although it is a little heavy on the ankle for on duty backup carry in the ankle holster, thats why I chose the vest holster for on duty carry. I'm looking at getting a titanium .38.

Usually carry both on and off duty. Our agency is a little anal retentive when it comes to the firearms policy, so we have a very limited selection of what we can carry and back ups are totally out of the question. Personally i would go with a airweight - titanium .38, light weight and won't jam on you.

We carry the dept issue Glock 40's on duty and at range time you have to qualify with whatever weapon you choose for off duty. Most opt for the smaller semi-autos, but the Glock is easy to conceal and not overly cumbersome. I always liked a derringer for a pocket pistol.

I carried a glock 40 on duty and a 22 auto for back up. I carry a beretta 380 and the 22 off duty.

I started off with a SW 649 as an off-duty and backup gun. Later on I switched to a SW 6904. Most guys on my department wouldn't dream of going on duty without a backup gun, myself included. Have had three friends saved by them. J-frame revolvers are good guns but I'm a reformed compact auto man now. Never leave home without it!

Usually where you see me, you will find my Glock 40 close by. As a general rule, off duty, I don't keep it in a holster, just shove it down the small of my back, and then it's out the door. I have seen those 38 titanium frame revolvers and have to say that I am impressed. They have the weight of a toy gun, however I always wondered if the recoil would add some wear and tear on your hands and wrist. I saw a copper the other day who had this nifty little 25 auto with a belt clip on it. From all outward appearances it would look like he is carrying a pocketknife. I'm sure someone would be very surprised to find out that is actually a small gun. The derringer is a good off duty weapon too. Lots of calibers available, and so easy to conceal it should be a crime.

Our department is very limited selection of on/off-duty weapons. Basically we can only carry the Glock 22 on-duty and the Glock 27 Off-duty. With a few exceptions (you can carry the Sig 226 or the S&W 4026 if those were the On-duty weapons when you joined the department). I carry the Glock 22 On-duty and the Glock 27 Off-duty. I do not carry a back-up weapon, but i am considering carring my Glock 27 in a vest holster as a back-up weapon.

I must admit that I have gotten a little complacent of recent and do not carry my weapon off duty as much as I probably should. We carry a Sig 357 and it is rather heavy and difficult to conceal. Most of the people I work with though and are close to in my department do carry off duty.

I always carry at least my colt mustang in my back pocket and as far as a back up gun I wear a S&W 669 on the ankle or inside jacket pocket during the winter if wearing boots

I carry the Kahr K40 as a backup. However I like Sarges choice of weapons. I have a Wilson 1911 protector and a Kimber classic stainless LE. These are not guns you want to try and conceal though. Our department is reviewing the firearms and we are going to be getting new weapons. If all goes well I will be carrying the Kimber on duty. Then I will probably consider buying a compact 1911 for backup. I like to keep my safety features the same on the weapons I carry on duty.

I carry a Glock 26 off duty and also for back up while working. I find it to be small enough in size to carry comfortably. Because it is a 9mm I carry +P+ ammo.

Though a big fan of anything H&H (a special forces standard the world over) the full size glock makes a good, reliable ( dishwasher safe :) ) weapon choice. Then the compact model makes a good backup / off duty carry. ie Glock 9mm full size model 17 and compact model 26. Tactical consideration. The compact can accept the full size mags!

I carry a Glock 31 on duty, and a Kel-Tec .380 in my uniform shirt pocket. Off-duty I carry a Taurus Ultralite-titanium .38+p or the Kel-Tec. I recently went to a FBI street survival school, and it opened my eyes to the laziness of not going back in the house to get your gun while off duty. It made me a believer of carrying again, both off-duty, plus back-up!!!

I am on the FIRM contention that it should be S.O.P. (which means Standard Operating Procedures) for virtually all departments and agencies through the U.S. that ALL LEOs carry a back-up, as they NEVER know when such a back-up will be THE THING that will be the only item available when needed. The departments and agencies which do not have such S.O.P. better not let me know that they don't because they shall get "an ear full" from me, then.

Bexar County mandates either the Glock 22 or 23 on-duty. As far as back-up weapons are concerned, they must be of .380 caliber or above. The officer must qualify with the back-up weapon as well as any weapon he/she wishes to carry off-duty. I usually carry a Glock 22 on and off-duty, although I sometimes give in to a Colt Officers with a couple of extra magazines - You never know!!! As far as a back-up goes, a snub nosed .357 stoked with +P .38's or full house .357's makes a nice choice. Hope this helps....RONIN

As a LE officer in Sydney Australia we are not permitted to carry a back up or off duty firearm. On duty we have personal issue Glock 22's and some plain clothes units carry 23's or 27's. Even after cops have been killed off duty the dept won't alter their policies. We can't even take home our o.c. spray. The weapons control is very strict and although Syd is probably not as dangerous as many other areas, we can't deny the potential threats we could face.

My response to that? My heart goes out to all of the officers in Sydney, Australia, who, in the course of just plain old living, may at some point be in the position to be THE ONLY person available when some culprit is shooting at a fellow officer, so, what in the world is that off-duty officer supposed to do? --- just stand there and watch his buddy get shot?
