One late summer evening while I was on patrol on a rural highway I met a newer model mini-van that appeared to be exceeding the posted 55 mph speed limit. Radar indicated a speed of 71 mph.I pulled onto the shoulder and after the vehicle passed me I pulled in behind it and proceeded to make a traffic stop. The driver soon stopped and as I approached I noticed that the female driver appeard to be of asian decent and had several young children in the back.
I asked the driver the ussual question, "Good evening, do you know why I stopped you tonight?"
The normal answer, "No I don't."
I advised her that I had clocked her running 71 mph in a 55 mph speed zone. I then asked her if she was in a hurry to get somewhere or if she had some excuse for driving so fast.
She stated that she did not.
I then requested the driver to stay seated while I return to my patrol car to run her drivers license which she had provided.
After a check for warrants was completed I returned to speak with the driver. I had determined that I would not be issuing the subject a summons for speed since our department is not a big fan of running traffic.
As I approached the driver she admitted that she indeed was in a hurry to get home and that she lives in a certain Mobile Home Park real close to where I had stopped her. She then proceeded to tell me that the reason that she was in a hurry to get home was "because she had to go to the bathroom real bad". She did not tell me whether or not she still needed to go but at this point I could not have kept a straight face long enough to have issued her a summons any way.
I gave the driver a verbal warning for speeding and remainded her that since she has her children with her she needs to be extra carefull since I would not want to see any of the get hurt. She agreed and proceeded on her way, driving more slowly.
